Rapunzel Rapunzel…….

So ages and ages (about 8 months) ago, so long ago I had totally forgotten about it, I had suggested to a friend that we should go see Rapunzel http://www.balletlorent.com/rapunzel.html when it came to Manchester. I had just read about how Carol Ann Duffy was writing a ballet of the fairy tale. And this seemed like a good thing. Anyhow about a month ago said friend rang me up and stated that it was coming to Manchester and did I want to go see it at the Lowry on a Sunday afternoon? Cue 27th April 3pm the Lowry, friend, friends mum and myself walk into a matinee full of little girls. I hadn’t realised it was going to be a family friendly production with an outreach/educative programme that had involved local families and children. I wasn’t sure, I hadn’t realised that it wouldn’t have live music, so that was kind of obvious in retrospect as it was in the little theatre at the back of the building, (it did have an amazing recorded track with voiceover (which I couldn’t work out if it was recorded or live).). But it was okay I was with friends and it couldn’t be so long if all these kids were here I figured, but then it turned out to be brilliant and incredibly moving. So that was good. It was family friendly, it was also really dark, exploring what happens to the parents whos baby is taken by the witch, becoming a story about loss, as well as desire (for a child) and the passage of time (something trite about how time gives while taking away, choose your instagram favourite of the mo). And at the end of the day it had some sort of aggressive turtle tortoise familiars for the witch. A witch who glided eerily by on rollerskates with her frankly disturbing attack tortoises. I was happy. The sets were great. The costumes were great. Amazing shadow scenes were thrown from the wrought iron look set which was fully integrated into the choreography. Everything was just really thoughtful and of superb quality, the costumes by the GOT designer were great. You get the picture.

P.S I wrote this a really long time ago…. Possibly years… I logged back on today for the first time in a long while and decided to just hit publish on this loitering theatre review. Maybe it will give me enough head space to actually write something else. Something about what I did today perhaps. Anyway, ciao bella. Speak soon and all that.

Lobsters of the World Unite!

So about a week and a half ago (maybe slightly longer) I told someone that they needed to promote themselves more and not be so reticent about what they do. To which the old adage of ‘do what i say, not what i do’ could, perhaps, be found to apply. But what do i want to promote about myself? The person i referred to earlier is a comedian and therefore needs an audience. But now i’m no longer a full time artist (apply term loosely) do i need an audience? Now i have left the harsh coal front of the creative industries,  do i need to showcase myself? I guess the reason i find myself typing today is because in some small, not too loud way, i’ve got things i’d like to put out there. But small splashes, not big ones. I’m not even sure that this will be about art, maybe just the art of living (and not going totally crazy out there in the big bad world). Or even more specifically and diminishingly my art of being me.
